An Internship at A Way Out
A Way Out is really excited to be offering a brand new internship program! This lasts 9 or 12 months and will give you the experience of working within the different areas of the charity. It will be a challenging year that will stretch you out of your comfort zone, alongside the opportunity for valuable training, support and encouragement to develop your skills and learn more about yourself.
Your program would be tailor-made to fit your skills, experiences and interests. Some of the areas you could be involed in include:
Outreach: Being part of a team that initiates contact with vulnerable women and young people, whether that is in the local community, a hostel, out on the street or helping to put on an event.
Assisting / leading sessions: This can be in a variety of settings including an informal drop in, a structured workshop or a recreational activity. Types of sessions include art, sport, life skills, pampering, awareness of leading a healthy lifestyle and raising self-esteem and confidence.
Befriending: Getting to know a person further, offering to be a friend and giving informal support. For example, to attend appointments, go out for coffee, join an exercise class and the encouragement of positive lifestyle choices.
Cooking healthy meals / baking cakes and biscuits: Lot of our sessions involve food! This includes eating together, teaching a cooking lesson and giving food out as part of our community outreach. Preparing food or passing on these skills is really useful.
Or maybe you are looking for an internship that does not necessarily involve contact with our clients or involves a mixture of both. Further opportunities available at include:
‘Made with Love' sandwich delivery: This involves representing A WAY OUT and delivering ‘Made with Love' sandwiches to local businesses in the area. ‘Made with Love' is an essential income stream in order to sustain the development of the café, which offers food and drinks to vulnerable people accessing A Way Out's services, at a low cost.
Fundraising: Regular fundraising events include ‘Rags and Muffins' (a vintage jumble sale with a twist), gig nights, bag packs and sponsored events such as runs and bungee jumps which all raise funds for A WAY OUT. You could help set up or participate in an event or even run one yourself!
Reception and administration: Greeting clients and visitors on reception and answering and redirecting phone calls is so important to the smooth running of life at our centre. This would mean being the first point of contact and be that friendly face as people walk through the door.
We can also incorperate your own skills into the program such as photography, floristry, hair and beauty, fitness, teaching, counselling or nutrition to name a few.
The internship program requires you to commit 25 hours a week to A Way Out projects for a period of either 9 or 12 months. If you are interested in this and would like more information then please contact the office by email or telephone.
